The FitnessGram team is filled with gratitude and inspiration after connecting with so many passionate educators who make our mission possible. During this year's conference, we were honored to meet hundreds of dedicated physical educators who shared their inspiring stories of how FitnessGram has impacted their students' lives. Your enthusiasm was contagious, and your feedback was invaluable. From veteran teachers sharing decades of FitnessGram success stories to new educators excited to implement our latest assessment items in their classrooms, every conversation reinforced why we do what we do.
Other Highlights from SHAPE 2025:
We are so grateful for all the engaging discussions about best practices in fitness assessment and powerful testimonials from educators nationwide, especially regarding the iconic and often dreaded FitnessGram PACER Test (Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run). We’ve been hearing feedback for years about the accolades and trepidation of this particular assessment. However, the PACER Test doesn’t need such a love-hate relationship.
For instance, did you know that the FitnessGram PACER Test, unlike any other running activity, has a built-in warm-up and is the perfect tool to train your body to build endurance? If you want to improve in any sport involving a lot of running around, this is one of the best tools! Yes! Today, we’re diving into what makes this assessment so unique, what it means to 'pace,' and why this test is such a great way to measure your aerobic capacity. Let’s get started!"
Unlike traditional running tests—like running a mile or sprinting as fast as possible—the FitnessGram PACER Test is about pacing yourself. You’ve shown us over the years that you have the intro memorized, but let’s focus for a second on what it all actually means:
You streak across a 20-meter distance back and forth, and you’ve got to reach the other side before the beep. The beeps start slow but get faster and faster as the test goes on. This gradual increase in speed makes the PACER Test super unique. Instead of focusing on how far or fast you can run in one go, it tests how well you can keep up with a changing pace over time. That’s the key! Pacing is all about managing your energy efficiently. If you go too fast too soon, you’ll tire out quickly. But if you go too slowly, you’ll fall behind the beep. The PACER Test teaches you to find that sweet spot—running steadily while gradually adjusting to the increasing intensity. In fact, pacing is such an essential skill that athletes, marathon runners, and even everyday fitness enthusiasts practice it to perform better and avoid burnout.
Now, let’s talk about why the PACER Test is such a great measure of aerobic capacity. Aerobic capacity is your body’s ability to use oxygen to fuel your muscles during exercise. It reflects your endurance and overall heart and lung health. The PACER Test challenges your aerobic system by gradually increasing intensity. The longer you can keep going, the better your aerobic capacity. And here’s the cool part: because the test gets harder over time, it’s a fair way to assess people at all fitness levels. Everyone starts at the same pace and progresses at their own ability!
