On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, President Donald Trump made an announcement regarding the return of the Presidential Fitness Test (PFT), reintroducing a national conversation around student fitness, performance benchmarks, and recognition.
Physical Fitness Award – aimed at the top 15% of students’ high performance.
The National Physical Fitness Award – recognizes average to above average fitness the 50th percentile and up.
Presidential Physical Fitness Test Completion Certificate – recognizes those students who complete the test and demonstrate a commitment to their fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
This marks a renewed national focus on youth fitness, health, and accountability nationwide. For many educators and district leaders already collecting health-related information, it also raises an important question, what is the right approach to student fitness assessment for your community?
At GreenLight Fitness, it’s not about choosing sides. It’s about choosing what best serves your students.
For nearly 45 years, FitnessGram has been a leader in youth fitness assessment. Over the years, our platform has supported millions of students and tens of thousands of school districts, helping educators measure what matters most: student health, progress, and lifelong fitness habits. Yes, even the original PACER test cadence started here.
What started as a way to provide a student fitness report card in 1982, has evolved into criterion-referenced standards, known as the Healthy Fitness Zone®, which:
Focuses on long-term health outcomes (such as decreased risk of metabolic syndrome), and
Emphasizes individual progress over peer comparison
More specifically, it became a space to provide a comprehensive fitness snapshot by measuring:
Aerobic capacity, muscular strength, flexibility, and body composition.
Behavioral and activity tracking concepts, not just test scores.
Continued updates based on exercise science, epidemiology, and pedagogy.
The transition from paper reports to a software-based platform enables:
o Longitudinal tracking of student fitness
o Automated reporting for schools and districts
o Data insights for program improvement
o Goal setting for students
o Easier communication with families
This still remains true, and we believe in the importance of meeting each student where they are, on their own unique, health-related journey. Fitness scores are more than just the results, it’s critical to recognize that they are just the jumpstart to the personal goal of each student, whether that is earning the Presidential Fitness Award, or being able to participate in the Presidential Fitness Test to the best of their ability.
At FitnessGram, we believe that it is up to each student to dream it, and we are the platform to help them achieve it. Last summer when the Presidential Fitness Test was first mentioned, we posted a press release announcing our intention to support states, schools, and districts who would implement this test for whatever reason.
FitnessGram is ready to help connect those dots. As schools start to implement updated fitness testing initiatives, FitnessGram confirms that its platform is fully equipped to administer, record, measure, track, and report student fitness assessment data at scale.
Supporting Both Paths…Because It’s Your Decision
With the Presidential Fitness Test returning, we recognize schools are not starting from scratch, they’re facing a choice.
Do you prioritize performance-based recognition and comparison?
Do you prioritize health-related standards and individual growth?
Or do you want the ability to do both?
Because while the outcomes have different aims, these approaches are not opposites. They often use the same underlying assessments; the difference is in how the results are interpreted and applied.
Not all students are motivated the same way, and your assessment approach shouldn’t assume they are. By supporting multiple approaches, schools can engage more students and create more inclusive fitness experiences. It also offers the opportunity to recognize that fitness is bigger than testing; it is deeply influenced by daily activity habits, engagement, and behavior. Tools within FitnessGram can track student activity through logs and surveys and provide students, parents, and educators the opportunity to connect and learn of the influence their daily habits have on their fitness outcomes.
As schools prepare to meet new national expectations around fitness testing and reporting, FitnessGram provides everything you need in one comprehensive solution:

Even though the FitnessGram Assessment and PFT are two separate measurements, rather than conflicting, the two approaches can complement each other in several important ways:
Criterion-referenced benchmarks establish a healthy foundation.
They reinforce that every student can pursue personal wellness and physical literacy, regardless of athletic ability.
Normative benchmarks provide context for performance.
They can help students, coaches, and educators understand strengths, growth opportunities, and advanced performance capacity.
Together, they support both inclusion and aspiration.
HFZ-style benchmarks help avoid discouraging students, while normative measures can motivate students who enjoy challenge, sport, and measurable performance goals.
They allow educators to separate “health” from “performance.”
A student does not need to be an athlete to be healthy. Likewise, a high-performing athlete still benefits from understanding whether their fitness supports overall wellness.
Therefore, if your district is preparing for what’s next in student fitness, now is the time to partner with the platform built for it.
